DVD Facts & Features |
Time vs. bit-rate
A DVD is generally created from movie files stored on a Non-Linear Editing system which are then encoded
for use on a standard consumer DVD player. A standard 4.7 Giga-Bit DVD can record up to 2 hours of video and audio at a
bit-rate of 3.5Mbps, lowering the video quality, i.e. lower bit-rate to 2Mbps and extend the time greater then 2 hours.
Wait a minute, what is bit-rate your asking? bit-rate is the speed at which the video/audio stream is
moving over a time period of 1 second. So then the higher the bit-rate is the higher the quality your video will be. As a
example, if we use a 4.7 Giga-Bit DVD to record a 1 hour video project the bit-rate will double to 9 Mbps, Wow... twice the
video quality. A DVDs maximum bit-rate is 15 Mbps.

How to get the most from your DVD
A DVD has a much superior video and audio quality then most other standards like; Broadcast Television,
Cable, or even a VHS tape. Because of the lower quality in these other standards our Television Monitors are usually miss-calibrated to compensate.
Black-Level is the key to a more enjoyable video experience. A higher black-level, a lower brightness-level, and to soften the sharpness and color
controls will vastly improve picture quality when viewing a DVD.
